Have you heard of the popular game, Exploding Kittens? The UNO-like game took the world by storm a few years back and has since sold more than 10 million copies. Now the company is relaunching another of their games, Happy Salmon, with a surprise for their loyal customers. Starting from January 18th and going until Monday, January 24th, Exploding Kittens will be awarding up to 10 lucky winners with the Happy Salmon 3D printed NFTs which they can either choose to keep, print or gift to another collector.
NFTs have been the latest trend for some time now in cryptocurrency. For those of you who might not know, non-fungible tokens, most commonly referred to as NFTs, are essentially non interchangeable digital goods, usually related to art, or the like that holds a value similar to currency like the Euro or Bitcoin. And they have also recently started to be present within the 3D printing community. So far most of the 3D printing NFTs havebeen for STL files or the like which the user can then 3D print themselves to own a physical copy. In this case, the NFT from Exploding Kittens (also the company’s name), will follow a similar pattern.

According to the giveaway announcement, these NFTs from Exploding Kittens will be the world’s first 3D laser-printable NFTs. They were designed in collaboration with Glowforge, an American manufacturer of 3D laser printers. As such, all the Happy Salmon NFTs, which are printable boxes to hold the game as can be seen in the image above, will be able to be printed through the company. To keep the design’s status as non-fungible, the file will be destroyed after printing. Essentially, winners who wish to print the design will need to reach out to Glowforge who will download the file, print it and destroy it immediately after. The box will then be sent to the owner. This ensures that it cannot be traded after being printed, it can only be used once. Exploding Kittens also reassures that the winners will be able to use the printer even if Glowforge goes out of business as the company is committed to open-sourcing their printers to keep them functional even if they are no longer around.
Talking about the decision for Glowforge and Exploding Kittens to collaborate on this project, Dan Shapiro, co-founder and CEO of Glowforge, commented, “My family’s been playing Exploding Kittens games together for years. Their games have always come in amazing boxes – one box meowed, and another had to be shaved with a razor. It was a huge challenge to come up with something even more incredible. Fortunately, the Glowforge 3D laser printer makes it easy to sketch, design, and create amazing things at the push of a button. We can’t wait to share this limited-edition printable NFT with the world.” The companies have also pledged to offset 10x of the carbon that is generated by emissions from this project to counter one of the most well-known drawbacks of NFTS. You can enter into the competition on Exploding Kittens’ Instagram or Facebook posts before the end of the giveaway. You can also find out more information about the project HERE.
